AI's advice on getting activity on a new forum

AI's advice on getting activity on a new forum

I have created two new forums recently and getting activity is difficult. Apart of adding new threads myself and doing post exchanges, people either aren't into forums or they're busy trying to build their own. Here is what AI told me to do:

Getting activity on a new discussion forum is one of the hardest parts of launching a community. The key is creating the illusion of activity first and then giving people reasons to return. Here are some strategies that work well:

1. Seed the Forum With Content

Before inviting people, create 20–50 starter threads across different sections.
Examples:

  • Questions (“What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?”)

  • Polls (“Which smartphone brand do you prefer?”)

  • Opinion topics

  • Guides or helpful posts

This makes the forum look active and gives new users something to reply to.

2. Ask Easy-to-Answer Questions

Threads that require very little effort get the most replies.

Examples:

  • “What did you have for dinner tonight?”

  • “What are you watching on TV lately?”

  • “Where are you posting from today?”

Short answers = more participation.

3. Run Simple Forum Games

Games are great for activity because people keep returning.

Examples:

  • Count to 10,000

  • This or That

  • Word Association

  • Rate the Avatar Above You

  • Caption This Image

4. Create Weekly Events

Recurring topics build habits.

Examples:

  • Monday Poll

  • Wednesday Debate

  • Friday Free Chat

  • Weekend Photo Thread

People start expecting these.

5. Personally Welcome Every New Member

When someone joins:

  • Tag them

  • Welcome them

  • Ask them a question

Example:

Welcome! What brought you to the forum?

This increases first replies.

6. Reward Activity

People love recognition.

Ideas:

  • Post count titles (Newbie → Veteran → Legend)

  • Member of the Week

  • Featured Post

  • Badges or points

7. Recruit a Small “Starter Crew”

Invite 5–10 friends or trusted members to help post daily in the beginning.
A forum with multiple voices feels more real than one admin posting everything.

8. Use Controversial (but respectful) Topics

Debates generate replies.

Examples:

  • “Is social media making people less social?”

  • “Should remote work become permanent?”

Just moderate carefully.

9. Cross-Promote the Forum

Share topics on:

  • Social media

  • Related forums

  • Discord communities

  • Reddit

Invite people to continue the discussion on your forum.

10. Reply to EVERYTHING

Early on, reply to almost every post so conversations keep going.
Dead threads kill momentum.

💡 One powerful trick:
The best-performing forums often have 1–3 very active sections rather than many empty ones. Start small and expand later.

  1. That’s actually a pretty solid breakdown. The idea of “creating the illusion of activity” early on is something many successful communities have done to get momentum going. I especially like the focus on easy questions and forum games. They’re simple but effective for getting people to participate. Consistency with weekly events can also really help build a habit for members. Definitely some practical tips here for anyone starting a new forum.
