Wizard of Oz today
I chose Zendaya for a modern Dorothy because she naturally checks a lot of the boxes that made the original character so memorable in The Wizard of Oz:
1. Youthful but strong presence
Dorothy isn’t just innocent—she’s brave, curious, and emotionally grounded. Zendaya has that balance: she can feel young and relatable while still carrying a story with confidence.
2. Expressive, sincere acting style
Dorothy’s journey depends on the audience believing her wonder, fear, and hope. Zendaya is known for subtle, expressive performances (like in Euphoria and Dune), which would translate really well to that emotional arc.
3. Musical and visual versatility
Since Dorothy is tied to music (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”), it helps that Zendaya has singing and dance experience. Plus, she can convincingly fit both a simple Kansas look and a more stylized fantasy world.
4. Modern audience connection
Casting today often considers who can resonate with newer generations. Zendaya has broad appeal across age groups, making her a strong anchor for a remake.
That said, she’s just one great option. Others who could also work really well include:
- Millie Bobby Brown (leans more innocent/classic Dorothy)
- Rachel Zegler (strong musical theater energy)
- McKenna Grace (very close to the original youthful tone)
